About Alyce Platt
Alyce Platt – is a renaissance kinda gal.
Her darkly eccentric paintings which have been exhibited at galleries and venues around Melbourne are an aside to her success in music, film, television and theatre.
Australian audiences first met Alyce when she launched her versatile career in the early 80s as a house-hold name on Sons and Daughters and Sale Of The Century.
Since then she has had many featured roles in Australian dramas, theatre and film including On The Beach, Blue Healers , Good Guys Bad Guys , A Country Practice, Neighbours, State Coronor, Janus, Halifax fp….Torch Song Trilogy, Sweet Charity, Love Letters, Cellophane Ceiling, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
This year Alyce performed her most challenging role to date, in the critically acclaimed street theatre performance of ‘Habits of the Heart’, portraying the life of a St.Kilda prostitute. She has also just finished filming a short film- A Kafkaesque, B-Grade, Burlesque, Film Noir-‘Cherry Bomb.’
Currently Alyce is stirring things up in Channel 7’s acclaimed new drama, City Homicide, in her role as the temptress character, Lorraine Sparkes.
Less is know about Alyce’s music career.
Her first CD, ‘Cowboys In The Attic’, which appeared in the indie music charts in 2000 under the name of ‘Baker’s Daughter’, received critical acclaim and sparked international interest, leading to gigs at the ‘Mink’ and ‘The Gig’ on Melrose in L.A. in 2001.
Alyce then recorded her debut album, ‘Beautiful Death’ with Melbourne musician J.P.Shilo of the Hungry Ghost and recently released her live album ‘Live from the Vault’. She is regularly heard on Melbourne radio PBS.
Alyce has been writing and forming her musical direction for some time. From an early age she started playing guitar and writing songs.
She studied drama and music and also did vocal training and operatic studies before meeting up and developing her own material with a number of different producers, including Richard Pleasance and Daniel Denholm.
In 1998, Alyce aligned with Pete Farnan from Boom Crash Opera and over the next two years they performed residencies at various venues around Melbourne.
Alyce and Pete developed and recorded her songs at Bung Hole studios. Baker’s Daughter enlisted the talents of Peter Maslen on drums, Mick Girasole on bass with guest players Howard Cairns on Sousaphone and Mary Johnson on Violin for the recording.
Her next collaboration was with Melbourne musician J.P.Shilo of the Hungry Ghost. J.P.Shilo (aka John Brookes) produced and arranged Alyce’s debut album Beautiful Death with Glenn Lewis of Violetine.
The trio recorded the album in Glenn’s ‘Ormond’ studio with his trusty assistant Ari Sintoss. Also appearing on the album is Queensland musician Kathryn Mckee playing cello.
To coincide with the release of Beautiful Death, in 2003 Alyce produced and co wrote a performance piece called Beat, Beat, Beat with director, actor Loiuse Siversen for the Melbourne Fringe festival.
Beat, Beat, Beat was an installation of sound, projected images, text and songs.
Alyce’s next album, ‘Li ve from the Vault’, was recorded at Sound Vault studios in West Melbourne before a live audience. This is a stripped back, live recording of Alyce’s songs where she plays guitar on most of the tracks.
Pete Farnan plays guitar and keys and Rosie Westbrook plays double bass. Other musicians who appear on this album are Claude Carranza on guitar, Stephan Hadley on double bass and electric bass and Tony Floyd on percussion and drums.
Alyce’s most recent live performance is all the pretty little horses, a ‘sophisticated chanteuse’ where she performs her own original music along with the songs of Marianne Faithful, Ella Fitzgerald, Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel, Velvet Underground, P.J. Harvey and Nick Cave. Together they blend to create an… emotional and revealing journey… about love, loss and frailty…. A little yearning, haunting melancholy with a sensual edge. Alyce considers it to be her most dramatic musical adventure.
